UK spouse visa English requirement 2026 — what exactly do you need?

If you or your spouse are applying for a UK spouse visa from Pakistan, one rule matters before everything else: every adult applicant must pass an approved English test. No test, no visa. This guide explains exactly which level you need at each stage — in plain language.

The three-step ladder

Step 1 — A1 (entry). To apply for the first spouse visa, the applicant in Pakistan needs a pass at level A1 in speaking and listening only. There is no reading or writing. The most common test is IELTS Life Skills A1 — about 20 minutes, face to face, taken in a pair with another candidate. LanguageCert, PSI Skills for English and Pearson PTE Home A1 are equally accepted alternatives.

Step 2 — A2 (extension). After 2.5 years in the UK, the visa must be extended — and the requirement rises to A2. Same speaking-and-listening format, slightly harder.

Step 3 — B1 for settlement (ILR). After 5 or more years, settlement requires B1 plus the separate "Life in the UK" test. Important change: the UK government is phasing in a higher B2 requirement from March 2027 on some routes. If settlement is in your future, keep an eye on this — reaching B1 early may save you from the harder test later.

Key facts people get wrong

• The certificate expires. A SELT certificate is valid for 2 years. Don't take the test a year before you're ready to apply.
• Only approved (SELT) tests count. A regular IELTS Academic score does NOT satisfy the A1 requirement — it must be a UKVI-approved SELT taken at an approved centre.
• Both partners don't take it. Only the applicant (the person applying for the visa) needs the test — not the British sponsor.
• Failing is expensive. Each attempt costs roughly PKR 50,000 in Pakistan. Structured preparation is far cheaper than a single retake.

Who is exempt?

Applicants aged 65 or over, those with a long-term physical or mental condition (with medical evidence), and nationals of majority-English-speaking countries. Most Pakistani applicants are not exempt.

What should you do now?

First, confirm which stage you're at (entry, extension, or settlement). Second, check your realistic English level — most village-background candidates need 4–6 weeks of structured practice to pass A1 comfortably. Third, only book the test when you're genuinely ready.
