A1 test fee in Pakistan (2026) — and how to avoid paying it twice

The English test is one of the smaller costs of a UK spouse visa — the visa fee alone is £2,064 plus a £3,105 health surcharge. But it's the cost families end up paying again and again when preparation goes wrong. Here's what the test actually costs in Pakistan, and how to pay it only once.

Test fees at a glance

• IELTS Life Skills A1 (British Council / AEO): approximately PKR 50,000 per attempt. The best-known option, with centres in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and more.
• LanguageCert SELT A1: often noticeably cheaper than IELTS, with a growing centre network including options convenient to Mirpur. Results are often faster too.
• PSI Skills for English / Pearson PTE Home A1: fees vary; the PTE Home test is fully computer-based — helpful for candidates who freeze in front of a human examiner.

All four satisfy the same visa requirement. Paying more does not make the certificate "stronger" — choose by price, nearest centre, and which format suits the candidate.

The hidden costs nobody mentions

• Agent commission. Some agents charge PKR 10,000–20,000 just to book a test — a booking you can do yourself online in 20 minutes. We show students how, free.
• Travel and stay. Candidates from Attock, Chakwal or Jhelum villages often travel to Islamabad or Lahore. Add transport, food, sometimes a night's stay — for every attempt.
• The retake trap. This is the big one. Fail once and you pay the full fee again, wait weeks for a new date, and delay the entire visa application. Two failed attempts cost more than PKR 100,000 — plus months apart from your spouse.

The maths every family should do

A structured 4-week preparation course costs PKR 25,000–35,000. One failed test attempt costs ~PKR 50,000 plus travel plus delay. Preparation is the cheapest item in the whole visa journey — skipping it is the most expensive mistake.

Three rules to pay only once

1. Don't book a date before you're ready. The certificate lasts 2 years; there's no prize for testing early.
2. Practise the real format — paired speaking, asking questions, UK accents. Most failures are format failures, not English failures.
3. Take a proper mock test first. If you can't pass a strict mock, you won't pass the real thing. Only book when a mock says you're ready.
